Built Better for Less: What a 1955 Walker Price Sheet Tells Us About 70 Years of American Manufacturing Progress

Seven Decades of Building Better in Tulsa

In December 1955, W.L. Walker Company published a Gauging Equipment Price Sheet listing many of the tools used every day in the petroleum industry.

Some of those products have disappeared. Others have evolved. Remarkably, several remain recognizable descendants of products Walker still manufactures today.

The old price sheet gives us something unusual: a way to compare the real cost of specialized petroleum measurement equipment across more than 70 years of American manufacturing progress.

The surprising result: after adjusting the December 1955 prices for inflation, a number of long-running Walker products carry lower published prices today than their predecessors did more than seven decades ago.

This does not mean product quality has been reduced.

Instead, these products have benefited from generations of improvements in manufacturing technology, tooling, materials, quality control, production methods, and accumulated manufacturing knowledge.

The Walker Tulsa Oil Thief

In December 1955, a 16-inch Walker Tulsa Oil Thief sold for $49.50. Walker's price sheet listed several sizes, ranging from a 12-inch model at $46.30 to a 36-inch model at $70.00.

Adjusted from December 1955 purchasing power, that $49.50 represents approximately $616.75 today.

The current Walker Tulsa Oil Thief carries a published MSRP of $462.13.

In real, inflation-adjusted terms, today's published MSRP is approximately 25% lower than the Oil Thief's December 1955 published price.

The product still performs the same fundamental job it did generations ago. What has changed dramatically is the technology, tooling, process control, and manufacturing knowledge used to produce it.

From Skilled Manual Machining to Modern American Manufacturing

For much of Walker's early history, manufacturing depended heavily on conventional machine tools and the skill of individual machinists.

That craftsmanship built the company's reputation and produced equipment capable of serving the petroleum industry for generations.

During the leadership of Anne Walker Brackett, Walker increasingly invested in modernization of its Tulsa manufacturing capabilities, including expanded use of CNC machining.

Computer numerical control did not eliminate craftsmanship. It gave Walker's craftsmen better tools.

CNC machining improved repeatability, reduced manual machine time on many operations, strengthened process control, and allowed increasingly consistent parts to be manufactured in more efficient production runs.

Improved tooling, better production planning, modern machining methods, tighter quality control, and decades of accumulated manufacturing knowledge continued that progress.

Manufacturing progress is not always about replacing a proven product. Sometimes it means giving skilled people better machinery, better tooling, better processes, and better control over how a proven product is made.

Built Better Does Not Mean Built Somewhere Else

There is an important point behind these comparisons.

Lower real prices have not required Walker to abandon American manufacturing.

W.L. Walker continues manufacturing its equipment in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while the hydrometer and thermohydrometer instrument families discussed here continue to be made in the United States.

Manufacturing efficiency should not have to mean reducing product quality, weakening a proven design, or simply moving production somewhere with lower manufacturing costs.

The better goal is to use improved machinery, better processes, better tooling, accumulated engineering knowledge, and skilled people to make a proven product more efficiently.

That has been an important part of Walker's manufacturing evolution.

MSRP Is Walker's Published Price

The modern prices used throughout this article are W.L. Walker Company's published Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices, or MSRP.

MSRP is the price Walker publishes for each product. It provides a consistent public benchmark that can reasonably be compared with Walker's published December 1955 prices.

It is not the price Walker typically sells the product for. Actual direct selling prices may be lower.

For this historical comparison, we use MSRP because it provides the clearest published-price-to-published-price comparison between December 1955 and today.

Why use MSRP for this comparison?

MSRP is Walker's published price. Using it allows us to compare the company's published December 1955 prices with its published prices today on a consistent basis. Actual direct selling prices may be lower.

More Than 70 Years of American Manufacturing Progress

It would be easy to look at an old Walker price sheet and simply marvel that an Oil Thief once cost $49.50.

But that number alone does not tell the story.

A dollar in December 1955 bought considerably more than a dollar does today.

Once that difference is accounted for, the historical record becomes much more interesting.
