How to Choose the Correct Oil Gauging Tape
An oil gauging tape is a precision measuring tool used with a plumb bob to determine liquid level, water level, outage, or reference height in a tank. These tapes are widely used on petroleum storage tanks, lease tanks, terminals, transport tanks, and in custody transfer work.
Choosing the right tape starts with a few basic questions. Are you measuring innage or outage? What units does the tank table use? How long does the tape need to be? What material is compatible with the product in the tank? You also need to consider the tape construction and the material of the plumb bob.
For most petroleum applications, a Lufkin Double Duty oil gauging tape is a good place to start. These tapes have been widely used for crude oil, refined products, lease tank work, terminal gauging, inspection, and custody transfer. They are durable, familiar to field personnel, and generally easy to read.
A verified oil gauging tape is a tape and bob that have been checked against a known reference. The purpose is simple: make sure the equipment is still measuring correctly.
Tapes can stretch. They can kink or wear. Markings can become difficult to read, and the tape end or bob connection can be damaged. Verification helps identify those problems before they affect a measurement.
New tapes used in fiscal or custody transfer work should also be verified before use. A tape being new does not automatically mean it is correct. Manufacturing errors are uncommon, but they do occur. When petroleum is being bought and sold, even a small measurement error can affect the reported volume and its dollar value.

Start with a Lufkin Double Duty Oil Gauging Tape
Lufkin is one of the best-known names in petroleum gauging tapes. Generations of gaugers, inspectors, terminal operators, and producers have worked with Lufkin tape systems.
For normal petroleum service, a Lufkin Double Duty oil gauging tape is usually the most practical starting point.
Double Duty tapes have a heavier feel than many stainless steel blades. They are also easy to read and familiar to people who gauge tanks every day. That makes them well suited for crude oil, refined products, lease tanks, terminals, and inspection work.
Stainless steel tapes have an important role, but they are not necessary for every job. Stainless blades are often thinner and can be more difficult to read in the field. They should generally be selected when corrosion resistance or product compatibility makes stainless steel the better material.
U.S. Tape products are another option, particularly for stainless steel or specialty applications. For routine petroleum gauging, however, Lufkin remains a common starting point.
Innage Tape vs. Outage Tape
One of the first decisions is whether the job calls for an innage tape or an outage tape.
An innage tape measures the depth of liquid from the tank bottom or strike point to the liquid surface. This method is often called dipping. It is common in petroleum tank measurement.
An outage tape measures the empty space between the tank reference point and the liquid surface. This is also known as ullage.
Neither method is automatically better. The correct choice depends on the tank design, gauging hatch, reference point, calibration table, and the measurement procedure being followed.
In many cases, the tank strapping or calibration table determines which method should be used.
Double Duty vs. Stainless Steel Gauging Tapes
A Double Duty oil gauging tape is well suited for everyday petroleum gauging. It offers a good combination of durability, readability, handling, and familiarity in the field.
A stainless steel oil gauging tape is more specialized. Stainless steel may be the better choice when the tape will be exposed to corrosive or chemically aggressive products.
That does not make stainless steel the best choice for every tank. Stainless blades can be thinner and harder to read. For ordinary crude oil and refined product service, Double Duty construction is often more practical.
A simple rule works well: use a Double Duty tape for normal petroleum gauging. Move to stainless steel when the product, environment, or operating procedure calls for it.
Chrome Clad and Specialty Tape Choices
Chrome clad and other specialty tape constructions are also available.
The material name by itself should not drive the decision. A gauging tape still needs to be readable, durable, long enough for the tank, compatible with the product, and capable of being properly verified.
Product compatibility becomes especially important with caustic or corrosive liquids. In those applications, both the tape and plumb bob materials need to be considered.
English, Metric, and Dual-Scale Gauging Tapes
The tape graduation needs to match the job.
English gauging tapes are common in U.S. petroleum work. They are typically marked in feet, inches, and fractions of an inch.
Metric tapes are used when the tank table, contract, company procedure, or reporting requirement calls for metric measurement.
Dual-scale tapes can be useful for people who work in both systems. For formal measurement work, however, the tape should match the units required by the tank table and the procedure being used.
Complete Tape Assembly or Replacement Tape Refill
A complete oil gauging tape assembly makes sense when the customer needs an entirely new unit or when the existing frame is worn or damaged.
A replacement tape refill is often all that is needed when the frame remains in good condition but the blade has become worn, kinked, corroded, damaged, or hard to read.
Before ordering a refill, check the tape length, graduation, tape type, frame compatibility, and bob connection.
Replacing only the blade can be a practical way to keep a good frame in service. The rest of the assembly still needs to be in sound condition.
Plumb Bob Selection Is Critical
The plumb bob is part of the measuring system, not just an accessory.
It provides the weight needed to keep the tape hanging properly and helps the gauger reach a consistent strike point.
Brass plumb bobs are common in petroleum service, but brass is not compatible with every product. Certain caustic or corrosive liquids can attack brass.
Where brass compatibility is a concern, a stainless steel plumb bob may be the better choice.
When selecting a bob, consider its material, weight, shape, tape connection, and the product being measured. The gauging method also matters.
Choosing the Correct Tape Length
A tape needs to be long enough to comfortably reach the required measuring point.
More length is not always better.
If most of the tanks being gauged are 18 to 25 feet tall, carrying a much longer tape may simply add weight and bulk without improving the measurement.
The best tape length is one that covers the expected tank range while remaining easy to handle in the field.
When to Replace an Oil Gauging Tape
A gauging tape should be inspected when it shows obvious wear or begins behaving differently in use.
Watch for:
- Kinks or bends
- Unreadable graduations
- Corrosion
- Surface damage
- Damage to the tape end
- A worn or damaged bob connection
- Frame or crank problems
- Poor repeatability
- Failure during verification
A clean, readable, well-maintained tape gives the gauger more confidence in the measurement.
Final Recommendation
For most petroleum tank gauging, start with a Lufkin Double Duty oil gauging tape in the correct length and graduation.
Use the proper metric tape when metric measurement is required. If the existing frame is still in good condition, a compatible replacement refill may be all that is needed.
For caustic, corrosive, or chemically aggressive products, select tape and bob materials that are compatible with the liquid. In many of those applications, stainless steel is the appropriate choice.
The right gauging tape is the one that fits the tank, the measurement method, the required units, the product being measured, and the applicable verification requirements.
